Cheryl A. Coakley-Rivera (previously Rivera) is an elected official in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In honor of her late mother Barbara Coakley Rivera, Cheryl officially changed her last name in March 2006 to Coakley-Rivera.
Cheryl earned her Juris Doctorate degree (Law Degree) from Western New England University, School of Law in 1995. She previously earned a Bachelor of Arts at Northeastern University and graduated from Cathedral High School (Class of 1982). She is a proud Panther!
Cheryl opened a successful law practice in March of 1997. However, public service called her attention and as a Democrat, she ran for the position of State Representative and served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1999-2014, representing the Tenth Hampden District, which includes her hometown of Springfield. She was the first female Hispanic elected to the Massachusetts Legislature and won the vote with an 85% margin. She chaired the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development, and Committees for Public Safety, and Children and Families.
In 2014, Cheryl accepted an appointment as Assistant Clerk of the Hampden County Superior Court and in 2018 successfully ran for the position of Register of Deeds for Hampden County becoming both the first Hispanic and first female elected as Hampden County Register of Deeds in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
