Register’s Message

Welcome to the Northern Essex Registry of Deeds.

An Act passed by the Massachusetts Legislature created the Northern Essex Registry of Deeds in 1869 and needless to say registries have come a long way since then.  Arguably the most significant changes have come over the past 30 years when the recording of documents transitioned from a pen and paper to high speed computers. Despite the radical changes that have occurred in the “way” we work, our mission has remained the same…to safe-keep public land records accurately and completely and to make these records easily accessible to the public.

Recent technological changes and upgrades at the Northern Essex Registry have put document retrieval at the user’s finger tips. A newly installed Internet Connection sends images to the public at a blazing speed fifteen times faster than the prior connection.  And currently close to 90% of all documents and indexes at the registry have been digitally imaged and are available for viewing and printing over the Internet.

But technological advancement is only one ingredient in the formula for a better registry of deeds, the other is friendly, customer service. In 2013 the Northern Essex Registry of Deeds opened a fully staffed Customer Service Department assigned the task of assisting the public by answering questions and providing information when needed. This department has been an overwhelming success.
